Quick answer

First, find out which problem you have. Samsung's own test: set the dryer to Time Dry, make sure Eco Dry is off, start it, and after 30 seconds open the door and feel inside.

The free causes Samsung lists for "no heat at all":

  1. One half of the breaker tripped (electric). Samsung says electric dryers use two circuits. If only one trips, the dryer "will turn on and spin but will not heat." Turn the breaker off for 30 seconds, then back on.
  2. Wrong voltage or a bad install. Electric dryers need a 240 V outlet. If it never heated since it was installed or moved, Samsung says installation is the likely cause.
  3. The gas isn't on (gas). Check the shutoff valve and connection.
  4. A blocked vent. Newer Samsung dryers reduce heat on purpose when they detect a clog, to prevent a vent fire.

If none of those fix it, a part has failed. On electric models it's usually the heating element, thermal fuse, or a thermostat. On gas models it's usually the igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coils (Samsung's HC2 code is a gas ignition error). Gas repairs are a job for a pro.

Repair or replace? Most no-heat parts are inexpensive, so repairing usually wins unless the dryer is old and needs a control board or several parts. Use the calculator below.

Which Samsung dryer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame or on the back. The first letters tell you whether it's electric or gas.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Do Samsung's 30-second heat check. Time Dry, Eco Dry off, start, feel inside after 30 seconds. Warm? Skip to "dryer is not hot enough" below. Cold? Keep going.
  2. Ask: has it ever heated here? Samsung says if the dryer has never heated since it was installed (or the install was changed), the installation is the likely cause, and service usually isn't needed. Check the cord, voltage, gas hookup, and vent against your manual.
  3. Cycle the breaker (electric). Turn the dryer's breaker off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This resets both halves of the 240 V circuit.
  4. Check the gas (gas). The shutoff valve behind the dryer should be on (handle parallel to the pipe), and the flexible line shouldn't be kinked.
  5. Turn off Eco Dry. Samsung says Eco Dry doesn't use hot air at the beginning of the cycle and reduces heat overall. On models that have it, Eco Dry turns on automatically for common cycles like Normal and Time Dry, to meet federal energy rules. Turn it off each time if you want more heat.
  6. Pick a heated cycle. Air Fluff and some delicate settings don't use much heat, or any.
  7. Clean the lint filter. Samsung says to clean it before or after every cycle.
  8. Check the vent. Samsung says the exhaust vent should be sealed, not plastic or foil, within the manual's maximum length, free of kinks or crushing, and with as few turns as possible. Each 90° turn reduces the maximum length by 6 feet.
  9. Reset the controls. Samsung's FAQ: turn the dryer off, unplug it for 1–5 minutes, then plug it back in and restart.

Smell gas? Don't touch light switches or the dryer. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't try to repair a gas valve yourself.

Run Samsung's Vent Blockage Test (about 2 minutes)

Many Samsung dryers have a built-in test that checks whether air can leave through your vent. It's the fastest way to tell "vent problem" from "heater problem."

  1. Make sure the drum is cool and empty.
  2. Press and hold Adjust Time Up + Dry Level until "Ins" or "In" appears. If that doesn't work, Samsung suggests Cycle 1 + Wrinkle Prevent or Air Fluff + Wrinkle Prevent. Button names vary, so check your manual.
  3. Press and hold Start/Pause. Don't open the door during the test. The result shows for five minutes.

How to read the result (per Samsung):

What you seeWhat it meansNext step
0 or EndVent isn't cloggedIf there's still no heat, a part has likely failed. Request service or call a pro
CLg / CgVent is cloggedClean the lint filter and vent, test again
C80 / C8About 80% of the vent is cloggedClean the vent
C90 / C9Over 90% of the vent is cloggedClean the vent; consider a vent-cleaning pro
CtDryer is below 32 °F or above 104 °FLeave it at room temperature for an hour, test again
HCAbnormal temperature detectedCheck the cord, empty the drum, test again; then check the vent; request service if it continues
dcDoor openClose it and test again
C1 / CL1Laundry in the drumEmpty the drum and test again
9C1Abnormal voltageCheck the cord is fully plugged in; request service if it continues

If your dryer doesn't have the test: Samsung's workaround is to disconnect the vent from the back of the dryer, run Time Dry (Eco Dry off) for at least 30 seconds, and feel for hot air. If it's hotter with the vent off, your vent is clogged or doesn't meet the manual's requirements. If you feel no hot air at all either way, the problem is inside the dryer.

Important caution from Samsung: some older models don't reduce heat when the vent is clogged, so the test isn't reliable on them. If cycles are long even though the dryer is hot, the vent is still the most likely cause, and Samsung says that's when you're most at risk of a vent fire.

Samsung dryer error codes that point to "no heat"

These come from Samsung's US dryer error-code guide. Models without a display show codes as blinking lights.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (and turn off the gas valve on gas models). Electric dryers run on 240 V. Work on gas valves, gas lines, or burners should be left to a qualified technician. If a thermal fuse has blown, find out why (usually a blocked vent) before you replace it, or the new one may blow too.

1. Electric: drum turns, no heat at all

Likely causes (roughly in this order): one half of the 240 V breaker off, low voltage or a bad cord install, a blown thermal fuse, an open heating element, a failed high-limit or cycling thermostat, or (less often) a thermistor or control-board relay.

Signs: cold air from the start of a Time Dry cycle (Eco Dry off), the vent test passes, and the breaker reset didn't help.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Thermal fuseOne-time safety cutoff; blows when the dryer overheatsEasy–moderate
Heating element (heater assembly)Heats the air on electric modelsModerate
High-limit thermostatCuts heat if the heater housing overheatsModerate
Cycling thermostat / thermistorRegulates or reports exhaust temperatureModerate
Main control board (relay)Switches power to the heaterModerate–hard; diagnose first

How a tech (or a confident DIYer) narrows it down: with the dryer unplugged, each of these parts is checked with a multimeter for continuity. A thermal fuse or high-limit that reads "open" has tripped; a heating element that reads open has burned through. That test takes minutes once the back or front panel is off, and it's why a diagnostic visit is often quick for this fault.

2. Gas: drum turns, no heat (or HC2)

Likely causes: the gas valve is off or the line is kinked, a cracked igniter, a failed flame sensor, worn gas valve coils, or a blown thermal fuse.

Signs a tech will look for: the igniter doesn't glow (igniter, flame sensor, or fuse); the igniter glows but the flame never lights, or lights and goes out within seconds (often the valve coils); no click or glow at all (thermal fuse, flame sensor, or wiring).

Gas dryers: we recommend a pro. A gas-valve or burner repair means working on a gas appliance, and a mistake can cause a leak or carbon monoxide risk. A qualified technician can test the parts and check for leaks after the repair.

3. Heats a little, or takes two or more cycles to dry

Likely causes: a restricted vent (by far the most common, per Samsung), Eco Dry, an overloaded drum, or soaking-wet clothes from a washer that isn't spinning properly. Samsung says that if there's any warmth, "service is almost never required."

Signs: the vent test shows CLg / C80 / C90, the outside flap barely opens, cycles keep getting longer, or the top of the dryer feels very hot.

Outdoor vent hoodReplaces a flap that won't openEasy–moderate

Clothes coming out of the washer soaking wet? Samsung points to the washer as the cause of long dry times in that case. See our Samsung washer won't spin or drain guide.

4. Cycle ends after a few minutes with wet clothes

Likely causes: dirty moisture sensors or a load that's too small.

Fix, per Samsung:

This isn't a heating fault, so you don't need a heater part.

Why a blocked vent matters (it's a fire issue, not just a slow-dry issue)

The US Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires a year in the US, and found "failure to clean" was the leading contributing factor (34%). Lint was the most common item first ignited. Samsung builds heat reduction into newer dryers for exactly this reason, and warns that older models without it put you at more risk when the vent is clogged.

What to do: clean the lint filter every load, use metal (not plastic or foil) duct, and clean the vent once or twice a year (Samsung's advice), or sooner if drying times get longer. Don't run the dryer when you leave home or go to bed.

What Samsung's warranty covers on a dryer

Samsung's US dryer limited warranty (wording from current model warranty cards):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and labor for manufacturing defectsSamsung
After year 1Not covered under the standard dryer warrantyYou

What this means for a no-heat problem: heating elements, thermal fuses, thermostats, igniters, and gas valve coils are covered only in the first year. After that, you pay parts and labor.

Check for extra coverage. Samsung's home-appliance warranty page currently advertises a 10-year motor warranty on washers and dryers with its Digital Inverter motor, plus a limited-time extended-warranty promotion. A motor isn't a heating part, so that coverage usually won't help with a no-heat repair. Check your own model and purchase date.

Watch the exclusions. Samsung's warranty doesn't cover damage from incorrect installation, incorrect line voltage, or failure to operate and maintain the product according to instructions. Samsung also won't cover a visit to correct installation that doesn't meet electrical or plumbing codes. A dryer that overheated because of a blocked vent, or a "never heated" dryer on the wrong circuit, may not be covered even in year 1. Warranty service must be done by a Samsung authorized service center, and you may need your dated bill of sale or proof of delivery.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything Samsung's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use [PLACEHOLDER: dryer lifespan, e.g. 12–13 years — cite source] if you don't know)

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider energy savings of a new model
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Samsung electric dryer is warm but slow, and the vent test shows C90. Vent cleaning R = $150; N = $1,000.
150 ÷ 1,000 = 15% → Clean the vent. It's not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Samsung electric dryer, cold air, vent test passes. Heating element + thermal fuse by a pro R = $280; N = $950.
280 ÷ 950 = 29%; life used 7 ÷ 12 = 58% → Repair is usually fine.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Samsung gas dryer, igniter glows but no flame, and the drum is squealing. Coils + drum rollers/belt R = $480; N = $900.
480 ÷ 900 = 53%; life used = 92% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a second major repair within a year or two, a control-board failure on an old dryer, a damaged drum, or motor/bearing noise on top of the heat problem.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fuse, thermostat, element, igniter, coils, or sensor; it's inside Samsung's first-year warranty; or the dryer is part of a matched stacked set.

Who services Samsung dryers near you

1. Samsung (warranty or official service). If you're inside the 1-year parts-and-labor window, start with Samsung. Samsung says a Samsung Certified Technician will call within 2 business days to confirm an appointment after you book.

3. A vent cleaning specialist. If the vent test shows CLg / C80 / C90, or the dryer is hotter with the vent disconnected, and your duct runs inside the walls or roof, a vent cleaner is the right call, not an appliance tech.

4. A licensed electrician. For 9C1, an HC that Samsung links to low voltage, or a dryer that has never heated since install, have the outlet and circuit checked.

5. DIY with the right part. Thermal fuses, thermostats, heating elements, and thermistors are common DIY repairs on electric models. Order by your exact model number.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude vent cleaning and damage from a blocked vent, and a dryer that's already broken is usually not covered. Most single no-heat repairs on a dryer cost less than a year of plan fees.

FAQ

Why is my Samsung dryer running but not heating?
On electric dryers, the most common free cause is one half of the 240 V breaker being off; Samsung says the dryer will spin but not heat. Cycle the breaker, check the gas valve on gas models, turn off Eco Dry, and run the vent blockage test. If it's still cold, a heating part has likely failed.

How do I tell if my Samsung dryer is heating at all?
Samsung's test: run Time Dry with Eco Dry off, and after 30 seconds open the door and feel inside. Any warmth means the heater works and the problem is usually airflow or settings.

What is Eco Dry, and why does it make my dryer feel cold?
Eco Dry reduces heat to save energy and doesn't use hot air at the start of the cycle. On models that have it, Samsung says it turns on automatically for cycles like Normal and Time Dry. Turn it off for a hotter, faster dry.

What does HC mean on a Samsung dryer?
Samsung says HC, hE, HC4, and 1 HC mean the dryer is getting too hot, usually because of a clogged lint screen or vent. On electric dryers it can also mean the heater isn't hot enough because of low voltage, so an electrician may need to check the supply.

What does HC2 mean?
Samsung lists HC2 as a gas ignition error. Check that the gas valve is on, power-cycle the dryer, and if it returns, request service. Igniter, flame sensor, and valve repairs are best left to a pro.

How do I run a vent test on my Samsung dryer?
With the drum cool and empty, hold Adjust Time Up + Dry Level until "Ins" appears (or try Cycle 1 + Wrinkle Prevent or Air Fluff + Wrinkle Prevent), then hold Start/Pause. 0 or End means the vent is clear; CLg, C80, or C90 means it's clogged.

How do I reset my Samsung dryer?
Samsung says: turn it off, unplug it for 1–5 minutes, plug it back in, and restart. For an electric dryer that spins but won't heat, also turn the breaker off for 30 seconds.

Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old Samsung dryer?
Often yes if it's a fuse, thermostat, element, igniter, or coils, since those parts are usually inexpensive. If it needs a control board or has other problems, compare the quote to a new dryer using the calculator above.
